Well, it does seem like Medium is leaving behind those of us who aren’t growth hackers, quantified selfies or writing long advertisements for the latest javascript framework.
Here’s a simple thought experiment: how many people will scroll all the way down, let alone read, a six thousand word essay on the political economy of water in Southern California (just making that up — I am not a political economist and Southern California is only a state of mind as far as I am concerned).
Yeah, I thought as much. If you don’t get to the bottom of an article, you don’t get to vote. The voting economy is biased towards the click-baiter. Perhaps Medium should create better avenues for algorithmic curation of long form articles but that’s a business decision, not an artistic or editorial one. Until then, we’d better stick to listicles.
